Division 03 reference
What does a concrete takeoff include?
A concrete takeoff from this desk is three quantity groups: concrete volume in cubic yards, formwork contact area in square feet, and reinforcing steel in length and weight. Each line names the drawing it came from. Waste, laps, and pricing rates stay off the measured quantity until someone agrees to add them.
What should you send with the request?
Send the current structural set, civil paving sheets if the bid includes site concrete, concrete specifications, rebar schedules, and every addendum. Add the project address, the bid deadline, and a list of trades you want left out. If a footing size is missing, the line is flagged instead of guessed.
What does a sample line look like?
These rows show the workbook shape. They are not quantities from a real job.
| Line | Unit | How it is measured |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous footing, schedule mark | CY | Length × width × depth from the footing schedule. Waste is a separate row. |
| Footing side forms | SF | Contact area of the vertical faces. See the formwork guide for which faces count. |
| #5 continuous bar | LF, then LB | Count × cut length. Weight uses nominal pounds per foot. Laps are their own line. |
| Slab on grade | SF and CY | Area inside the slab boundary, times the specified thickness, converted to cubic yards. |
Which tools produce the file?
Sheets are measured on screen, typically in Bluebeam Revu, and the quantities land in an editable Excel workbook. PlanSwift is used on some in-house sets. The quote confirms the file type before work starts. Hiring the takeoff does not require you to buy those seats for the bid.

Questions about the takeoff checklist
Is a concrete takeoff the same as a full estimate?
No. A takeoff is the measured quantity. A priced estimate adds material, labor, and equipment rates from a named source. Say which one you need when you send the plans.
Which sheets usually change the concrete quantity?
Foundation plans, wall and slab sections, structural schedules, civil paving plans, and the latest addendum. Architectural floor plans alone rarely show footing sizes.
Do you include other trades in the same workbook?
The default scope is CSI Division 03 concrete, formwork, and reinforcing. Excavation, pumping, and embeds are included only when the quote lists them.
